xSuite Interface Windows Prism 5.x – Online Help

Update

Notice

Before installing the update, always terminate running program instances.

We recommend creating a backup copy of the existing program directory. If the new update contains errors or is incompatible, the backup copy can be used to revert to the previous version.

xSuite Interface is updated in one of two ways: as a version update or as a patch.

Type of update

Description

New program version

A program version is identified as such by the first two numbers in the version number (e.g., 5.0 or 5.1).

New program versions contain both new functions and all error corrections made since the last version. A new program version is delivered as a stand-alone setup program. The setup contains all program files and is executed just as an initial installation is (see Installation).

If the program has already been installed, you will not be asked for a target directory again. The files in the existing directory will be updated implicitly. The setup program will overwrite all directory files that have the same name. The files will then contain the current version of the program. Files that are not part of the new setup package will remain unchanged in the program directory. Files that remain unchanged might include third-party libraries, customer-specific license files, configuration data, and working directories copied to the directory after the previous installation. Library files must be located in the program directory. All other files should be separated from the program files and stored in separate data directories.

Notice

As an exception, the directory might still contain obsolete program files – files that were part of the old program version but are no longer used in the new program version (e.g., third-party libraries previously delivered along with the program).

From a technical point of view, such unused files will not interfere with operation. If you remove unused files, explicitly uninstall the old program version beforehand. In such a case, ensure that you transfer any additional files not included in the setup package, moving them from the old program directory to the new program directory.

Patch update

Patches of a specific program version are identified as such by a third number in the version number (e.g., 5.0.1 or 5.0.2).

A patch generally contains important bug fixes but no new functionalities. The patch is only applicable to the program version indicated in the first two digits of the version number.

If multiple patches are available for a program version, the patches with the higher version numbers will also include all the corrections supplied by the older patches. The update package for a patch is usually delivered in the form of a ZIP archive file. This file only contains the files that have changed in the program version.

A patch is installed manually. To do so, copy the contents of the ZIP archive file, including the existing subdirectory structures, to the root directory of the existing program installation.
